The stones beneath her worn boots were smooth, worn by untold ages, and the faint, phosphorescent glow of moss clinging to the cavern walls provided the only illumination. It was a stark contrast to the neon glare she knew, a primal light that seemed to emanate from the earth itself.
She paused, her breath catching in her throat. The silence was profound, broken only by the distant drip of water and the thrumming in her own ears, a sound that had grown steadily louder with every step deeper into the earth. “Are you sure about this, Anya?” Kael’s voice, usually a steady anchor, held a tremor of unease. He stood a few paces behind her, his hand resting on the hilt of the knife he kept concealed. Even his street-smart instincts seemed to falter in this alien environment.
