The neon glow of the city, usually a comforting hum, felt more like a predator's glare tonight. Anya huddled deeper into the shadowed alcove, the rough brick scraping against her worn jacket. Kael, usually a whirlwind of nervous energy, was unnervingly still beside her, his gaze fixed on the mouth of the alley. A cold dread, sharper than the damp night air, coiled in Anya’s stomach. This meeting, this supposed safe haven, felt wrong. Elara had been so insistent, so urgent about this specific rendezvous point, a derelict warehouse district on the city’s forgotten edge. “Trust the whispers, child,” Elara had murmured, her ancient eyes holding a flicker of unease. But the whispers tonight were a discordant chorus of suspicion.
Anya’s hand instinctively went to the small, intricately carved wooden box tucked inside her coat. The artifact. It pulsed with a faint warmth against her skin, a silent promise of power and a beacon of danger. Silas would stop at nothing to possess it. And tonight, it felt as though he was closer than ever.
“He’s late,” Kael finally breathed, his voice a low growl. “This doesn’t feel right, Anya. Not at all.”
