Alan knelt, his movements slow and deliberate, a stark contrast to the frantic energy that had gripped Mrs. Higgins’ farm mere hours before. Around him, nestled in a soft bed of dry leaves and moss, the missing puppies stirred, their tiny snores a gentle symphony against the rustling of the woods. They were a tumbled heap of fur and sleepy sighs, utterly oblivious to the worry they had caused. He reached out a hand, his fingers brushing lightly against the flank of the smallest, a little brindle fellow who twitched in his sleep. They were unharmed, just tired, their grand adventure having evidently run its course.

A soft whine drew his attention. Barnaby, the larger, golden-hued dog who had been their playful guide, sat a respectful distance away, his tail thumping a hopeful rhythm against the earth. His large, brown eyes, full of an earnest, uncomplicated affection, were fixed on Alan. He looked like a happy child who had led his friends on a grand game, utterly unaware of the consternation his games had wrought.

“You,” Alan said softly, his voice a low murmur that wouldn’t startle the slumbering pups, “you’re a handful, aren’t you?” Barnaby responded with a happy sigh, nudging his nose towards Alan’s outstretched hand. Alan scratched him behind the ears, the fur soft and warm beneath his fingers. “You meant well, I know. Just a bit too much enthusiasm, perhaps.” Barnaby responded with a contented groan, his tail wagging a little faster. He was a creature of simple pleasures, and Alan suspected the puppies had provided a delightful diversion.
