The Goblin's Lair

The air, once crisp with the promise of adventure, had grown heavy and damp, clinging to us like a second skin. Every rustle of leaves, every snap of a twig, now sent a prickle of unease down my spine. Roric, ever the stoic sentinel, had his hammer held at the ready, his gaze sweeping the dense undergrowth that pressed in on us from all sides. Lyra, usually so vibrant, was a pale shadow beside Bowen, her hand clasped tightly in his. Hope, bless her brave heart, was scanning the trees with that focused intensity I’d come to admire, her bow nocked and ready, though her knuckles were white.

“This doesn’t feel right,” Bowen muttered, his voice low, a rumble of concern in his chest. He shifted his axe, the polished wood gleaming dully in the scant light filtering through the canopy.

I nodded, my own hand instinctively going to the hilt of my sword. “It’s too quiet. Even the birds have gone silent.”
