Chapter 5

A Shifting Alliance

The forest canopy, once a comforting emerald embrace, now felt like a suffocating shroud. Each rustle of leaves, each snap of a twig, sent a tremor through my already frayed nerves. It wasn’t just the thought of Agnes, though that was a heavy, scaly weight in the pit of my stomach. It was… everything else. The way Hope’s laughter, when it escaped her, was like a sunbeam breaking through the gloom, and how my own voice seemed to snag in my throat whenever I tried to speak to her. The way Bowen, bless his practical heart, kept glancing at Lyra with that soft, unguarded look that made my chest ache with a confusing mix of envy and brotherly affection. And then there was Keal.

Lyra, ever the organiser, was meticulously sorting our dwindling supplies, her brow furrowed in concentration. Bowen, his axe propped against a moss-covered boulder, was sharpening his knife with long, deliberate strokes, his gaze occasionally drifting to Lyra. Hope was sketching in her worn leather-bound book, her charcoal stick dancing across the page, her dark hair falling forward to partially obscure her face. I watched her, my own heart doing that stupid little fluttery dance it seemed to have adopted since we’d left home.
