Victory's Embrace
The silence that followed Agnes’s final, shuddering exhalation was more profound than any noise I’d ever known. It wasn’t just the absence of her monstrous roar, nor the cessation of the earth-shattering thuds of her massive claws. It was the quiet that settled into the very marrow of my bones, a stillness that felt earned, fragile, and utterly, blessedly complete. The acrid smoke still stung my eyes, and the stench of burnt hide and something disturbingly like sulfur clung to the air, but beneath it all, there was a new scent: the faint, sweet perfume of victory.
Hope, her usually vibrant green eyes now wide and dark with a mixture of exhaustion and something akin to awe, was leaning against a jagged outcropping of rock. Her bow, usually so steady in her grasp, was lowered, its string slack. A smudge of soot marred her cheek, and her dark hair was a disheveled glory, escaping its braid in wisps that clung to her damp skin. I wanted to reach out, to brush the grime away, to tell her she was magnificent, but my limbs felt heavy, rooted to the spot by the sheer enormity of what we had just accomplished.
Bowen, bless his practical heart, was already inspecting the damage. He moved with a weary efficiency, his axe resting against his shoulder, his blue eyes scanning the cavernous space. Lyra was beside him, a pale but resolute figure, her hand resting on his arm as if to anchor herself. Even in the dim light filtering through the cavern’s entrance, I could see the relief, profound and deep, etched onto her face.
