The air in Grump’s usual brooding corner of the Land of Numberblobs hung thick with a discontent that even the most cheerful fractals couldn’t penetrate. Sunlight, usually a playful dance of hues across the rounded surfaces of his home, seemed to curdle, reflecting his sour disposition. Grump, a Numberblob whose edges were perpetually set in a frown, scowled at a particularly vibrant moss patch that dared to grow with untroubled exuberance. His own existence felt like a perpetual subtraction, a constant lack that gnawed at his core.

The very idea sent a jolt of pure, unadulterated envy through Grump. The greatest number. Imagine! To possess it, to hold it, to *be* the one who had it. It would surely fill the gaping emptiness inside him. It would prove everyone wrong. It would make him… significant.
