The air grew thin and sharp as Pip and Professor Sum ascended, the jagged teeth of the Counting Cliffs a distant memory now. Below them, the world of rolling hills and Numberblob villages had shrunk to a tapestry of greens and blues, a comforting sight Pip clutched in their mind. The map, now worn and softened from countless unfoldings, pulsed with a faint, internal light, urging them onward. It pointed not to a peak, but to a deep, winding gorge that sliced through the mountains like a forgotten scar.

“Are you sure about this, Professor?” Pip’s voice, usually bright and eager, held a tremor of apprehension. The map indicated this was the only way to the Crystal Caves, but the entrance to the gorge was shrouded in an unnerving stillness. No birdsong, no rustle of wind – just a profound, expectant silence.

Professor Sum adjusted his spectacles, his brow furrowed in concentration. “The ancient texts speak of this passage, Pip. A place where the very numbers themselves seem to hold their breath. It is said that only those who can speak the language of numbers, not just count them, are permitted to pass.” He tapped the map with a gnarled finger. “And that, my young friend, is precisely where the Digit Dragons make their home.”
