The package had been unassuming, a plain brown box tied with coarse twine, tucked almost apologetically between a stack of yellowed magazines and a deflated rubber ball. Anya had nearly tossed it, another piece of detritus in the city’s endless refuse. But the faint, almost imperceptible hum emanating from within, a resonance that vibrated not just in her fingertips but deep in her bones, had made her pause. Now, the flower, its petals a cascade of impossible blues and violets, pulsed with a light that seemed to drink the dimness from the room. It sat on a cracked saucer, a defiant jewel against the grimy linoleum.

She’d spent the better part of the day staring at it, her usual routine of cataloging discarded treasures abandoned. The flower’s scent wasn’t floral in any way she recognized. It was sharp, clean, like the first breath of air after a thunderstorm, yet beneath it, a sweetness that hinted at forgotten gardens and skies that weren't perpetually overcast. Her fingers, usually nimble as they sorted through tangled wires and broken trinkets, felt clumsy and hesitant when she traced the delicate curve of a petal. It was impossibly smooth, cool to the touch, yet it seemed to hold a latent warmth, a quiet energy.

Anya’s room, a sanctuary of sorts built from the cast-offs of a world that had long since forgotten her, felt smaller, more suffocating, with the flower’s presence. The worn suitcase, its leather scuffed and scarred, seemed to sag with the weight of unspoken journeys. The books, their spines cracked and pages dog-eared, held stories she’d devoured in a desperate attempt to fill the silence, but none had ever whispered of such vibrant, alien beauty.
