Eleanor traced the rim of her teacup, the ceramic cool beneath her fingertip. Outside the window of Marcus Bellwether’s sun-drenched study, the late afternoon sun cast long, gentle shadows across the manicured lawn. The air was still, thick with the scent of old books and something akin to quiet wisdom. She had come seeking answers, as she had many times before, but today felt different. Today, the usual gnawing ache of unfulfillment seemed to have dulled to a dull throb, a more manageable discomfort.

Marcus sat opposite her, his gaze steady and kind, like a deep, placid lake reflecting the sky. He hadn’t offered platitudes or easy solutions. Instead, he had simply listened, his presence a comforting anchor in the swirling currents of her uncertainty. They had been speaking, or rather, Eleanor had been speaking, her words tumbling out in a hesitant stream, about the pervasive feeling of being adrift. She had confessed her envy of those who seemed to possess an innate sense of direction, their lives unfolding with a seemingly effortless clarity.

“It’s as if they have a map,” she had murmured, her voice barely above a whisper, “and I’m just wandering, hoping to stumble upon a destination.”
