The silk of my tunic rustled against my skin, a familiar whisper that usually soothed me, but tonight, it felt like a shroud. The throne room, usually a place of stern pronouncements and hushed reverence, was a battlefield of my own making. My father, King Theron, sat upon his gilded seat, his face a mask of regal disappointment, etched with the weariness of a thousand battles fought and won, and perhaps, a few lost in the quiet corners of his heart. Beside him, the council members, a sea of somber robes and averted gazes, represented the unyielding tide of tradition and expectation that had always threatened to drown me.

And then there was Kael. He stood before them, not as the thief I had first known, but as himself, stripped bare of pretense, his gaze steady, his hands clasped loosely behind his back. He did not flinch from their scrutiny, nor from mine. His eyes, the color of a stormy sea, met mine, and in their depths, I saw not just defiance, but a love so profound, so unwavering, that it stole the air from my lungs.

“This union,” my father’s voice boomed, each syllable a hammer blow against the fragile peace I had fought so hard to secure, “is an affront to the crown, to our kingdom, to everything we stand for.” He gestured with a trembling hand towards Kael. “A thief. A commoner. And… you, my son, heir to the throne.”
