The world outside the witch’s cottage had turned a sickly shade of purple, the light filtering through the dense canopy a jaundiced hue that did little to soothe the knot of dread tightening in Leon’s stomach. Jasmin, her small hand clasped tightly in his, was trembling beside him. The witch, a hunched figure with eyes like chips of obsidian, had been peering out from her crooked window, a smile that didn’t reach her eyes stretching her thin lips. It was then, in that unnerving stillness, that the air had shifted, growing heavy with an unspoken threat. Leon, ever the one to react first, had tugged Jasmin’s hand, his voice a breathless whisper, “Run!”

They had tumbled out of the cottage, not daring to look back, their feet a blur on the mossy ground. The familiar path they had stumbled upon earlier seemed to twist and turn with a malevolent intent, the trees closing in around them like grasping fingers. Every snapping twig, every rustle of leaves, sent jolts of panic through them. Jasmin’s breath hitched with each frantic stride, her small body rigid with fear. Leon, though his own heart hammered a frantic rhythm against his ribs, tried to project a bravery he didn't feel. “Keep going, Jasmin! We’re almost there!” he gasped, though he had no idea if they were even heading in the right direction.

The woods, once a place of wonder and exploration, had transformed into a labyrinth of shadows and whispers. The fading light did little to help, instead casting long, distorted shapes that seemed to writhe and mock them. They ran until their lungs burned and their legs ached, until the trees began to thin and a faint, familiar glow appeared through the branches. Home. The word was a prayer on their lips, a beacon in the encroaching darkness.

Bursting through the edge of the woods, they didn’t slow until they were at their own front door, fumbling with the latch, their hands shaking. The relief of being back in their own familiar hallway, bathed in the warm, comforting light of the lamp, was immense. But it was short-lived. As the door creaked shut behind them, a strange feeling settled over them, a disquiet that clung to them like the damp chill of the forest. It wasn't the warm embrace of safety they’d expected, but a lingering unease, as if the witch’s gaze had followed them all the way.

Upstairs, tucked into their shared bedroom, the feeling intensified. Jasmin, usually the more composed of the two, tossed and turned, her sleep fractured by unsettling dreams. The witch, her face contorted in a wicked grin, loomed large in her nightmares. She saw herself being forced to drink a strange, murky liquid, her body morphing, twisting into something alien. In her dream, the witch cackled, her voice like dry leaves skittering across stone, as Jasmin found herself transformed into a creature she barely recognized, a creature that was both familiar and terrifying.

Leon, however, slept soundly, his dreams a stark contrast to Jasmin’s. He dreamt of a vibrant, magical world, of soaring through the sky on the back of a magnificent steed. He dreamt of a peculiar, yet strangely delightful, sensation between his legs, a sensation that felt both powerful and exhilarating. He dreamt of a ‘Pferde Pipimatz,’ a thing of pure fantasy, and in his dream, it was a source of immense joy. He awoke with a contented sigh, a faint smile still gracing his lips.

It was then, in the quiet stillness of the night, that a soft, rhythmic thudding sound echoed from downstairs. *Thump… thump… thump…* It was faint at first, almost imperceptible, but it grew steadily louder, more insistent. Jasmin, jolted awake by the sound, sat bolt upright in bed, her eyes wide with a renewed wave of fear. “Did you hear that, Leon?” she whispered, her voice trembling.

Leon, still groggy from his pleasant dreams, blinked at her. “Hear what?”

“That noise,” she insisted, her gaze fixed on the closed bedroom door. “It’s coming from downstairs.”

He listened, his brow furrowed. The thudding was undeniable now, a peculiar, almost musical beat. He swung his legs out of bed, the floorboards cool beneath his feet. “I’ll go look,” he said, trying to sound braver than he felt.

Jasmin’s hand shot out, clutching his arm. “No! Don’t go! It’s… it’s her, I know it!”

But Leon, driven by a mixture of curiosity and a desperate need to prove that the witch was no longer a threat, gently pulled his arm away. “It’s probably just the wind,” he said, though he didn't believe it for a second. He crept out of the bedroom, Jasmin watching him with wide, terrified eyes. He tiptoed down the creaking stairs, the thudding growing louder with each step. It seemed to be coming from the front door.

He reached the bottom of the stairs and peered into the dimly lit hallway. The front door stood slightly ajar, a sliver of darkness peeking through. The thudding was now a distinct, rhythmic pulse, right at the door. Hesitantly, he approached, his heart leaping into his throat. He reached out a trembling hand and pushed the door open a little wider.

There was no one there.

Jasmin’s breath hitched from behind him. “See? Nothing,” Leon said, his voice a little shaky. He felt a wave of relief wash over him, quickly followed by a pang of disappointment. Had he been wrong? Was it just his imagination, fueled by Jasmin’s fear?

“Let’s go back to bed,” he suggested, turning to go back upstairs. Jasmin, though still visibly shaken, nodded and followed him. They climbed the stairs, the unsettling thudding fading as they moved further away from the front door. They settled back into their beds, the silence of the house now more unnerving than the noise had been. Jasmin, exhausted and still on edge, drifted back into a fitful sleep.

Leon, however, found himself wide awake. The strange thudding, though gone, had left a residue of unease. He lay there, listening to the quiet hum of the night, when suddenly, a faint shimmer of light caught his eye. It was coming from the hallway, just outside their bedroom door. He
