The air in Hargeisa, and indeed across the whole of British Somaliland, thrummed with a peculiar blend of elation and a sort of giddy disbelief. It was the 27th of June, the day after the Union Jack had been respectfully lowered, replaced by the proud, clean lines of a new flag, and the ink on the parchment of unity was barely dry. The previous day, a grand, almost theatrical affair, had seen the parliament, a room buzzing with the weight of history, formally approve the plan to join with the Trust Territory of Somalia. It was a decision made with a collective nod, a shared sigh of hope that felt as vast as the desert sky.
Little did they know, the sheer force of that
