The air in Hargeisa on June 27th, 1960, hummed with a peculiar mix of triumphant exhaustion and a giddy, almost nervous anticipation. The jubilant cheers of the previous day, celebrating their hard-won independence, had barely faded, replaced now by a different kind of buzz. It was the sound of a nation taking a deep breath, looking around, and then, with a collective shrug that was both brave and a little bit bonkers, deciding to hold hands with their southern cousins.
In the bustling marketplace, where yesterday the talk had been of Somaliland’s glorious future as a sovereign state, today’s conversations had taken a sharp, albeit amiable, turn. Old man Hassan, his face a roadmap of wrinkles etched by sun and laughter, sat by his stall overflowing with vibrant spices, a mischievous glint in his eye. “So,” he cackled, nudging his neighbor, a younger man named Abdi who was meticulously arranging small, carved wooden camels, “yesterday we were the kings and queens of our own castle. Today, we’re thinking of joining a bigger kingdom?” He shook his head, a smile playing on his lips. “It’s like buying one sheep, then deciding you want the whole flock, even if some of them are a bit… well, southern.”
Abdi chuckled, his hands pausing their work. “Hassan, you always see the funny side. But it’s true, isn’t it? One minute we’re singing ‘Our Land, Our Flag, Our Freedom!’ and the next we’re saying, ‘Let’s see what this Somalia thing is all about.’” He picked up a particularly intricate camel. “The elders say it’s about a bigger family, a stronger voice. They say we are one people, divided by lines drawn in the sand by others.”
