Chapter 1
The Unseen Cracks
Sarah and Mark's marriage, once a picture of perfection, begins to show subtle signs of strain, hinting at an unspoken disconnect.
The morning sun, usually a cheerful herald of a new day, felt muted, filtered through the blinds of their bedroom window. Sarah stirred, the scent of brewing coffee a familiar comfort, yet she couldn't quite shake the lingering chill that had settled in her bones. Mark was already up, a ghost in the periphery of her mornings now. She’d hear the shower run, the clatter of keys, the soft thud of the front door closing, all before her own feet hit the floor. It wasn't a dramatic shift, nothing she could point to with a definitive date or a specific incident. It was more like the slow, imperceptible creep of frost on a windowpane, obscuring the vibrant world outside. Their conversations had thinned, the easy ebb and flow of shared thoughts replaced by polite inquiries about work and the weather. Laughter, once a constant soundtrack to their lives, now felt like a distant echo, a memory of a melody she could no longer quite recall. She’d catch herself watching him sometimes, the way his brow furrowed over his laptop, the slight slump in his shoulders as he navigated the complexities of his day, and a pang, sharp and unexpected, would pierce through her. It was the pang of an unseen disconnect, a widening chasm that whispered of unspoken words and unmet needs, leaving behind only the faintest, almost imperceptible cracks in the foundation of what she had always believed was an unbreakable bond.
