…The ancient stones hummed with power, and the very ground beneath us seemed to vibrate. The night was young, and the terror, I knew, had only just begun. The whispers of ancient prophecies, the stirrings of a rising darkness, the gnawing secrets within our hearts – they were all converging on this night, under this blood-red moon, drawing us into a maelstrom from which none of us might escape unchanged. The air itself felt heavy with foreboding, a premonition of the trials to come, of the sacrifices that would be demanded, and of the true cost of our power. The night had begun, and the Crimson Omen was upon us.

The pulsing glow of the crimson moon pressed hot against her skin, stoking the tangled dread in her chest. At the circle's edge, wind rushed through the oaks, their ancient limbs thrashing, as if the groaning wood itself sought to warn them away. Each of the four witches stood rigid, but it was the darkness between them that felt most alive, pulsing with secrets and possibility.

She—Elowen, bearer of the curse, the one whose hands still shook from the memory of love lost—stepped forward. The urge to speak, to confess, burned bitter on her tongue, but fear bound her tighter than any spell. Her own secret—the wild, reckless bargain with the spirit beneath Oakhaven—ached in her bones, threatening to fracture what fragile trust remained in the coven.

Seraphina’s eyes rolled back in her head, moonlight flickering on her lashes. She spoke again, this time her voice raw, layered with something not entirely her own. “It’s close. The darkness wants inside.”

Maeve placed a steadying hand on Seraphina’s shoulder. Her earth-magic licked at the stones, anchoring them, steadying the ground, as if she might hold the world together by will alone. “We face this together,” she repeated, but Elowen caught the faintest tremor in her voice.

Lyra, wild-eyed and trembling, let her power slip the leash. Sparks of forbidden energy danced at her fingertips—hungry, erratic, beautiful and terrible all at once. “I can feel it calling. It wants me to join it. I—” Her words cut off, face twisting in pain. Elowen’s heart lurched; the darkness was seducing Lyra, stoking longing and fear alike.

Suddenly, the standing stones shuddered, the air splitting with a crack as a fissure opened in the earth at their center. Sickly red light welled up, and a shadow crawled from the gap, limbs impossibly thin, its face a mask of writhing sorrow. The thing’s presence pressed against Elowen’s mind, seeking out her guilt, tugging hard at the grief sealed deep inside.

“Speak my name,” the shadow hissed, its voice like iron dragged over stone. The coven’s protective wards flickered, dimmed, then sputtered uncertainly.

Seraphina gasped, clutching her chest. “It’s after our hearts. Our regrets. If we let it, it will unmake us.”

Elowen’s fingers tightened on her talisman. The shadow’s regard fell on her, hungry, knowing. Her secret pulsed in response, as if the spirit below the city were waking, aware of tonight’s reckoning. The pull was inexorable—a siren’s song in the marrow of her magic.

Maeve glanced at her, sharp and searching. “Elowen?” The unspoken question: What have you done? What darkness have you brought?

The shadow lashed out, spectral tendrils darting toward Lyra, who barely parried with a wild flare of energy. The stones shook again; the fissure widened, cracks radiating outward, threatening to shatter the sanctity of their circle.

Elowen’s heart hammered. The air sang with ancient threat, with the weight of promises made and secrets kept. Her own power rose inside her—untamed, dangerous, aching for release. Was it time to confess, or to wield the darkness she had bargained for, whatever the price?

The shadow surged, pressing the coven to the brink. Elowen felt her past and her present collide, all choices narrowing to this breathless, irreversible moment, as the crimson moon bled brighter and the spirit's hunger reached for her soul.
