…“You’ll change your mind when your jeans don’t button,” she said sagely. “Trust me. I’ve been there.” He groaned, but he couldn’t suppress a smile. The idea of shopping together, of sharing this absurd experience with someone who laughed instead of panicked, was oddly comforting. That night, as he lay in bed, he placed both hands on his belly. The skin was taut and warm. He felt another kick, stronger than before, and he murmured, “Okay, little one. I don’t know who you are or why you’re here, but we’re going to get through this. Together.” And for the first time, he felt a flicker of something that wasn’t fear. It was wonder. And maybe even a little bit of love.
