…The choice before her was becoming starkly clear. She could pursue the conventional path, search for a thief, try to restore the Mirror to its pedestal, and in doing so, maintain the illusion of stability. Or, she could follow the threads of truth, however tangled and painful they might be, and confront the possibility that the Mirror’s absence was a symptom of a deeper malady, a malady residing within the heart of their most revered elder. The latter path would undoubtedly shatter the fragile peace of their village, but it might, just might, lead them to a truer form of understanding. The weight of that decision settled upon her, a burden heavier than any artifact.
