…As they rounded the gnarled trunk, their laughter died on their lips. A profound silence descended, a stillness that was absolute and unnerving. There, nestled amongst the exposed roots of the ancient tree, lay Elias. His eyes were closed, his face etched with a peace that was both startling and deeply disturbing. Beside his outstretched hand, glinting dully in the faint moonlight, lay a small, empty bottle. The air around him seemed to hold a sorrow so profound, so complete, that it suffocated them, stealing their breath and their voices. The shadows, which Elias had always known so intimately, had finally claimed him.
