…Javier stood there, watching the black sedan disappear down the road. His heart pounded. His hands were shaking. Nia squeezed his hand. "You did good." "Did I?" "You didn't hit him. That's a start." He let out a shaky breath. "He's not done." "I know. But we are. For now." They stood together on the porch, the afternoon sun warm on their faces. The road was empty. The woods were quiet. But somewhere out there, Dre was still driving. And Javier knew that the choice he'd just made wasn't the end of anything. It was the beginning of something harder. He just hoped he was strong enough to see it through.
