…"Drop the weapon!" a deputy shouted. Dre froze. His eyes darted around, calculating. Then he dropped the gun. "This ain't over, Mendoza," he said. "Yeah, it is." The deputies moved in, handcuffing Dre and the other man. Javier watched, his breath ragged, his hands shaking. Nia touched his arm. "You okay?" He looked at her. The headlights caught her face, and she was beautiful and fierce and alive. "I don't know," he said. "But I think I might be starting to learn." She smiled, just a little. "That's all I ask." Behind them, the deputies read Dre his rights. But Javier barely heard it. He was too busy watching Nia, and thinking about what it meant to stay.
