…--- They sat on the porch after that, wrapped in a blanket, watching the stars. The night was cool and quiet, the only sound the crickets and the distant hoot of an owl. "What happens now?" Nia asked. "I don't know," Javier said. "But I'm not going anywhere." She rested her head on his shoulder. "Good." He thought about the streetlights he'd left behind in California. The ones that marked territory, danger, the edges of a world he'd never wanted to escape until he found something worth staying for. Here, there were no streetlights. Just stars, and a dirt road, and a woman who believed in him. And for the first time, Javier believed in himself too.
