…And then his phone buzzed. He pulled it out. An unknown number. A text message. "Nice try. But you can't hide forever. —C" Javier stared at the screen. The warmth drained from his chest. "Who is it?" Nia asked. He didn't answer. He just held up the phone. She read the message. Her hand tightened on his. "We knew it wasn't over," she said softly. "Yeah." Javier pocketed the phone. "But that doesn't make it easier." He looked out at the road. The streetlights at the end were glowing orange, casting their light on the pavement. Somewhere out there, another storm was gathering. But this time, he wouldn't face it alone. The night stretched on, and the waiting began again.
