…Nia came out and sat beside him. She didn't say anything. Just leaned her head on his shoulder. "Two days," he said. "Then we figure it out." "And if I can't?" "You can." Her voice was soft. "You already did the hard part. You chose to stay." He wrapped his arm around her. The porch swing creaked gently. Somewhere down the road, a car door slammed. Javier's head snapped up. He strained to see, but the streetlights only showed empty pavement. "Probably nothing," Nia whispered. He wanted to believe her. But the night was long, and Eladio was still out there. And Javier knew, deep in his bones, that the hardest choice was still ahead of him.
