…He turned a corner, the neon sign of a closed diner casting a sickly green glow on the wet pavement. He stopped, the weight of his thoughts pressing down on him. He looked back towards the alley where The Family held court, a place of shadows and whispers. He knew, with a certainty that chilled him to the bone, that he couldn't stay in the shadows forever. He had to choose a side. And the choice, he suspected, would be a dangerous one. He just didn’t know yet if he was brave enough to make it. The night offered no answers, only the deepening silence, a vast, empty canvas waiting for the next brushstroke of violence or hope.
