They left the ruined grove, stepping over the scattered rubble, into the Veilwood that now seemed darker, more watchful. The trees had stopped whispering. Even the birds were silent. Elara’s mind felt hollow, a room emptied of furniture. She searched for the gap where a memory should have been, but found only white space. She would remember eventually. Or she wouldn’t. Either way, they had a new moon to face in the dark.
