…The tunnel sloped upward, then leveled out, then widened into a chamber. She stood, stretching her legs, and looked around. The room was natural, but in its center stood a single pillar of rock, carved with symbols she recognized from the book. The spiral. The star. And the third one—the circle with a line through it. And then she heard it. A whisper, echoing from the walls, from the floor, from the air itself. “You should have brought him. He would have been useful.” Elara's blood went cold. She spun, but there was no one there. Only the shadows at the edges of her vision, stretching, reaching, growing. The Shadow Weaver was inside the mountain with her. And she was alone.
