…Noah’s return was a terrifying reminder of the darkness she had tried to escape. But the stranger, the man with the unseeing eyes that had seen so much, was an enigma. He was a danger, she knew, a potent, unknown quantity. Yet, beneath the fear, a strange curiosity began to stir. A seed of fascination, planted by a gaze that promised both peril and an undeniable, dark allure. Her world, once a simple canvas of high school worries, was rapidly being painted over with shades of mystery and a growing sense of dread. The shadows were gathering, and Rosie, the innocent freshman, was caught in their deepening twilight.

The last bell echoed through the halls, a sharp clatter that startled Rosie back to herself. She blinked, the blur of afternoon light slanting through tall windows, painting golden bars across the tiled floor. Students spilled into the corridors, laughter and chatter rising in a familiar cacophony, but Rosie felt detached, hovering just outside the pulse of the day.

Her skin still tingled where Noah’s fury had hovered too close, and the phantom imprint of the stranger’s gaze lingered at the nape of her neck. She gripped her backpack straps tighter, breath catching as she hurried toward her locker. Max was nowhere to be seen; he’d stormed off after the confrontation. Ava and Mia hadn’t found her after class, their faces lost in the crowd. Alone, Rosie moved like a ghost through the shifting tide of bodies, every sense straining for danger—or maybe, impossibly, for the enigmatic presence of the man who had saved her.

She almost ran into him.

He was waiting at the end of the hall, leaning against the wall as if he'd always belonged there. No one else seemed to notice him—students swerved unconsciously, giving him a wide berth, as if the air around him was charged.

Rosie stopped short, heart thudding. His eyes found hers. Up close, he looked older than the other students, yet somehow ageless: sharply cut cheekbones, lips drawn in a half-smile that did nothing to soften the darkness in his gaze. He didn’t blink. He didn’t move. But something in his posture told her he was waiting for her to speak.

Rosie’s throat went dry. "Why did you help me?" The words escaped, breathless, betraying her vulnerability.

He considered her, head tilted, eyes flickering with something unreadable. "Some people need saving. Especially from monsters they once trusted."

Unsettled, Rosie took a half-step back, only to find herself boxed in—not by him, but by the impossible magnetism he radiated. Closer now, she realized she recognized him from somewhere—a fleeting glimpse in the city, maybe, or a photograph in one of Max’s news clippings. Danger clung to him like a scent, and yet she couldn't look away.

"You don't know me," she whispered, lowering her gaze. Her hands trembled around her backpack straps.

He let out a low, almost amused sound. "Not yet. But I know what it is to be hunted by shadows." He paused, his voice gentling. "You should avoid Noah. He isn’t finished. The next time, I may not be nearby."

Rosie swallowed her fear, confusion, and a strange spark of defiance. "I can take care of myself."

A flicker of approval, or maybe admiration, crossed his features. "Perhaps. But you’re not alone in this anymore."

With those parting words, he slipped a folded scrap of paper into her hand—a phone number scrawled in a bold, unfamiliar hand—then melted away into the crowd, leaving her heart thudding and her mind reeling.

The hallway seemed colder without him. Rosie stared at the slip of paper, mind racing. Unasked questions pressed at her lips, urgency tangled with an inexplicable longing she didn’t dare name. Behind her, a shadow darted—Noah’s silhouette at the far end of the hall, watching, relentless.

Rosie’s pulse skittered. The stranger’s warning echoed in her chest. She stuffed the number into her pocket just as Noah started toward her, his smile twisted, hungry for vengeance. The world narrowed to the corridor between them—the dimming light, the echo of footsteps, the promise of danger or rescue.

Her next move would decide everything.
