…ree was east of the ridge past the Hemlock Line, and I had a direction and a piece of metal and a dead man's journal entry and the name of a woman named Eleanor who had gone into the woods in 1973 and not come back, and I had my mother's name on a wall in blue ink and a lifetime of seeing things I'd told myself weren't there, and I had a window that was closing and a friend who was somewhere on the other side of it. I started the car. The engine sounded too loud in the quiet. The trees stood in their line and did not move, and the space between them was grey, and the grey was the same grey Maya had drawn in her notebook, and I could see it, and it could see me, and I drove toward the ridge.
