…This is what I couldn't do. I reached through alone and the door treated it as an offering, not an exchange. Two people must touch the membrane simultaneously. One on each side. Don't let them go alone. Don't let anyone go through alone again. I look at Skylia. She's already moving toward the tree, the iron rod raised, the marks on her arm blazing. She's going to reach through. She's going to touch the membrane and find Maya's hand on the other side. And I'm going to hold the gate open. Both hands on the iron. Both feet on the ground. For as long as it takes. Thirty years I fed the door to keep it closed. Now I hold it open and trust it doesn't eat me.
