The dogs outside, usually so boisterous, let out a low, collective whine, their hackles raised, their gazes fixed on the dark, imposing silhouette of the mountains that cradled their valley. It was a sound that spoke of ancient things, of mysteries that lay just beyond the reach of their flickering lanterns, deep within the heart of the land where mountains whispered secrets. The Shoshone had always known. And now, it seemed, Samaria was beginning to feel it too.
