…He closed his eyes and let the darkness take him. In the morning, they would climb the Ridge. They would stand at the top and see the world spread out like a promise. And Taye would believe, for a few more hours, that the only secrets waiting for him were the ones written in the land. But secrets, like the road, have a way of turning when you least expect them. And the ones carried by the people beside him were already shifting, restless, waiting for the moment when the light would fail and the truth would step out of the shadows. The fire crackled one last time and died. And the journey began.
