…He imagined his mother, as a child, grappling with her unknown history, and then, years later, David, a product of that uncertain lineage, unleashing his own brand of terror upon the world. The thought was a cold, visceral one, a chilling possibility that made the hairs on the back of his neck prickle. Had the darkness been inherited, or merely amplified? Had his mother’s obscured past somehow, inexplicably, paved the way for David’s monstrous present? He couldn't shake the feeling that the answers, however painful, lay buried in the ashes of those burnt records, a ghost of a lineage that was now inextricably, horrifyingly, linked to their own.
