Xai nodded, but his gaze had already drifted back to the flickering fire, to the phantom whispers that promised understanding, that offered a path to protect the brother he loved. He didn't realize he was already walking a path laid out by something ancient and malevolent, a path that would lead not to safety, but to the precipice of a far greater danger.
