When the Gingerbread Man Ran Away

…“Are you sure you’re alright?” the Gingerbread Man asked, his voice trembling slightly. “You seem to be sinking.” The fox gave another sly smile, its amber eyes gleaming. “Oh, don’t you worry about me,” it said, its voice taking on a new, dangerous edge. “I’m just getting a little… closer to my meal.” And with a sudden, swift movement, the fox tilted its head back. The Gingerbread Man felt himself slide, tumbling into the churning water. He sputtered, he struggled, but the river was too strong, the fox too quick. He felt a sharp snap, a crunch, and then… nothing. The gingerbread man, brave and quick-witted, was no more. The river carried away the last crumbs of his spicy adventure.
