…Leo turned and began to walk away, his gait slow and heavy. He didn’t look back. Renee remained perched in the kapok tree, hidden, watching him go. The sun was beginning to dip below the horizon, casting long, eerie shadows across the clearing. The jungle, which had once seemed so full of promise, now felt like a vast, untamed wilderness, and she, Renee, was still alone, but now, she was also wary. The encounter had stirred something within her, a flicker of the old warmth, but it was buried deep beneath layers of self-preservation and a hard-won independence. She had survived without Leo. Now, she had to figure out how to exist with him, or without him, in this changed world.
