…The light was blinding. The entity screamed, and Valerius screamed with it, a sound of tearing. I reached for him, but a barrier of energy pushed me back. When the light faded, Valerius lay on the ground, the key shattered beside him. The glow in his chest was gone. But so was the light in his eyes. He was alive, but empty. A shell. The entity's voice echoed in the chamber, fading. "You have won nothing. He is free of me, but he is also free of himself. The void you sought to fill now fills him." I knelt beside him, cradling his face. "Valerius. Can you hear me?" No response. His eyes stared at nothing. I had saved him from the entity. But at what cost?
