…As I walked out into the violet dusk of the French Quarter, I felt the weight of that iron door pressing against my consciousness. I had sought a hypnotist to find answers. Instead, I had found a question that would not let me go. And somewhere, in the shadows between worlds, I heard Marie Leveau’s voice, soft as silk: You have taken the first step. Now the path will take you. I walked home under a sky that seemed darker than it had any right to be, and I knew that sleep would not come easily.
