…The darkness came. Anya let it. She fell, and Seraphina caught her, and the wards hummed, and the Academy stood, and somewhere in the dark, a woman with cold emerald eyes and midnight-blue robes was making a phone call — or whatever the vampire equivalent of a phone call was, which was probably more dramatic and involved more candles — and the next phase of a plan that had been in motion for longer than anyone knew was beginning to turn. The peace, such as it was, held for the night. It would not hold for long.
