The chapter ended with Anya opening her eyes, the golden light of the reforged covenant fading from the air, and Vespera's whispered warning still echoing in her mind: "The old powers will rise." But Anya did not flinch. "Let them," she said again, and this time she said it to the world. The howl answered her. The first star flickered in the darkening sky. And far beneath the Academy, in the catacombs where the crystal had shattered, something ancient stirred. It was not the covenant. It was something the covenant had been holding back. Something that had been sleeping for a thousand years. And it was hungry.
