…"Welcome, Anya," Vespera said, her voice smooth as silk, sharp as glass. "I hope you've enjoyed your last moments of freedom. Because after today, nothing will ever be the same." Anya straightened her spine. She looked at Vespera, and the looking was the thing that she had learned from her mother, from Mara, from the girl who had carried the poison in her blood, from the dance that had broken the seal. "You're right," Anya said. "Nothing will ever be the same. But not the way you think." Vespera's smile flickered, just for a moment. And the hearing began.
