…He blinked. The words remained, burning into his retinas. He looked around the alley, half-expecting someone to jump out, to tell him it was a prank. But there was no one. Just the shadows and the silence and the impossible glow of his broken phone. His thumb hovered over the screen. He didn’t know what this was. A glitch. A virus. A hallucination brought on by cheap whiskey and a shattered heart. But part of him, the part that had been crushed and broken and left for dead, saw something else. A chance. A way out. A path that didn’t end in a mag-train track or a bottle of pills. He touched the screen. The world went white. And then it began.
