…I'm not suggesting my grandparents did anything wrong. They did everything right, by their own lights, providing a safe harbor and abundant love. But they simply didn't carry the specific genetic code that defined my mother and father. They couldn't offer me the mirror I desperately needed to see myself reflected, to understand the origins of my own peculiar blend of chaos and drive.
