…The soft glow of her desk lamp spilled into the hallway. She was researching, I knew. Pouring over ancient texts, delving into local folklore, anything that might offer a glimmer of hope, a clue to the nightmare that had ensnared us. The whispers in the dark seemed to grow louder, more insistent, as if sensing her efforts, as if mocking her attempts to unravel their insidious grip. They coiled around my thoughts, whispering of inevitability, of decay, of a fate already sealed. I clutched my jaw, the phantom ache a constant reminder of the insidious presence within. The night was long, and the whispers, like the splinters, were digging deeper.
