…He scrambled towards it, not to reclaim it, but to destroy it. He picked it up, his hands slick with sweat, and hurled it against the wall. It struck with a dull thud, but it didn’t break. It didn’t even chip. It simply bounced back, landing at his feet. The entity laughed again, a sound that scraped against Harry’s very soul. He stared at the amulet, then at the locked door, then at the unyielding window. His cynic’s heart, once so adept at seeing through deception, was now paralyzed by a terror he’d never imagined. He had sought a fortune, and instead, he had found damnation. The devil, it seemed, always collected his due.
