…“Kitty! It’s us!” Eva added, her voice a little stronger, fueled by a desperate hope. Their calls seemed to be swallowed by the trees, absorbed by the rustling leaves and the distant hoot of an owl. The flashlight beam danced nervously, illuminating gnarled roots that resembled grasping claws, twisted branches that formed eerie silhouettes, and, everywhere, the shimmering, gossamer strands of spiderwebs. They hung from branches, draped between trees, forming delicate, almost ethereal curtains that seemed to pulse with a life of their own in the faint light. Tina’s apprehension about spiders flared, but she pushed it down, focusing on the hollow ache in her chest where
