…“You shouldn’t have come here alone, Detective,” the voice purred, a cruel caress. “Some mysteries are best left unsolved.” Then, as quickly as they had appeared, they were gone, melting back into the shadows from which they had emerged. Zee lay on the grimy pavement, the pain a dull roar in her ears. The city’s breath, once a restless sigh, now felt like a suffocating shroud. She was alone, wounded, and the predator was still out there, free. But even through the haze of pain, a spark of defiance ignited within her. They had made a mistake. They had underestimated her. And they would pay for it. The lure of the unknown had drawn them out, and now, the unknown would become their undoing.
