…Beside him, a young woman, her eyes wide with a fear that mirrored Zee's own, clung to his arm like a lifeline. Steph, he’d called her, her name a whisper of innocence lost. Zee watched from the periphery, a prisoner in her own mind, as he steered Steph further into the oppressive atmosphere of the house. The chilling pronouncement, delivered with a possessive possessiveness that made Zee’s skin crawl, echoed in the silent rooms: "I will be having you in turns anytime I feel like. Do not try to play games with me. Even at night, mostly you, Steph. I will have you very soon." The words hung in the air, a suffocating shroud, and Zee felt the last vestiges of her hope fraying at the edges.
