…Just as a fragile peace began to settle, the floorboards creaked. He was awake. He stood over her, a dark silhouette against the faint moonlight filtering through the grimy window. A heavy hand landed on her hip, then a swift, stinging slap across her bare bottom. Five times. The sharp pain jolted her awake, a gasp escaping her lips. He grabbed her hair, pulling her up and over the edge of the worn wooden table. The rough surface scraped against her skin as he forced her into position, his body pressing against hers. The act was brutal, devoid of tenderness, a stark reminder of her utter powerlessness.
