…She rose, her movements stiff, and went about the tasks he’d set. The water ran hot in the shower, steam fogging the small bathroom. In the kitchen, she prepared his usual breakfast, her hands moving with a practiced, if numb, efficiency. When he finally emerged, looking marginally more human, she presented his food and the steaming water. He ate, and when he was finished, he pulled her onto his lap, the rough fabric of his trousers a stark contrast to her own thin dress. He spooned a piece of fruit into her mouth, his thumb brushing her lip. "You are good," he said, the words thick with a possessiveness that chilled her to the bone.
